If you’re thinking of proposing or are getting married very soon, then make sure it’s to your best friend, your soul mate, the one who you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Making memories with that one special person is what marriage is all about, so let's celebrate the marriage of a wonderful couple who have been married for 60 years!
Lesley was 17 and Doreen was 18 when they first met through a friend at night school. Lesley used to pick his friend up on his motorbike where they caught sight of one another and their first date soon followed. However the motorbike disappeared when Doreen gave Lesley an ultimatum between her or the bike!
After 2 years dating, Lesley dropped Doreen home one night in the car when he popped the big question. With an engagement ring costing £30 at the time, they set their wedding date for Saturday 24th May 1958.
Doreen walked down the aisle with a beautiful bouquet of pink Carnations and Lily of the Valley, wearing a beautiful wedding dress made by her auntie. Despite being told that it was bad luck if your bridesmaids didn’t wear traditional pink or blue, Doreen decided she wanted her bridesmaids to wear mint green to be different.
Their ceremony was followed by ham salad and trifle – which was quite a feast considering some of their foods items were still on rations following the war!
The couple's wedding cake was made by Doreen which was topped with a silver vase containing Lily of the Valley to match her bouquet. Last year Doreen made the same cake for her grandson’s wedding which was topped similarly to her own wedding cake she made 60 years ago.
Over the years, the loved-up pair have had two children and five grandchildren. They absolutely love spending time with their families and as you can see from their Disney World Florida holiday, are still living life to the full, making magical memories together.
Doreen and Lesley celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with their family, and Lesley's best man celebrated with them - there was even ham salad!
To have yourself a long and happy marriage, Lesley and Doreen's advice is 'to give and take and to look after each other, and learn to say sorry.'
So follow their advice and you might bag yourself an anniversary card from a member of the Royal Family! Many congratulations to you both.
